Best known for his early maps of Europe and the New World and re-establishing the reputation of the work of fellow cartograher George Mercator. He helped in making Amsterdam the center of cartography in mid 17th century Europe. Growing up in Ghent, he became an established engraver, instrument maker & globe maker.
