Thursday, Nov 3 2011 at 11:31 pm - This is an original 1883 chromolithograph from an embroidered ceremonial fukusa, a Japanese square cloth made out of silk and used for wrapping special items. The image represents the "lucky ship" or the "ship of good fortune." Accompanying it are a crane, a kame, (or tortoise), both symbols of longevity, and another ship laden with packages of rice. The ships, kame, and the border are printed with gold ink. Unfortunately, in our digital capture this brilliant ink appears dullish brown. ( Read more ... )
